J-RaT No. 4 "Moralities of Warfare and Religion"
Under the special editorship of Angela Kallhoff (University of Vienna) and Thomas Schulte-Umberg (RaT member, University of Vienna) the open access online Journal for Religion and Transformation devoted its spring issue 2018 to the topic of "Moralities of Warfare and Religion". The new issue includes contributions from two conferences on the topic of "Moralities of Warfare" held at the University of Vienna (2014, 2016) and from a call for papers. Research on religion in World War I has shown how religion played a major role in theen durance of combatants and non-combatants alike during the "seminal catastrophe" (George Kennan) of the 20th century. As can be learned in the recent past, e.g. with regard to parts of the Muslim World, the Ukraine and Russia or the United States, this role of religion in war doesn't belong to a bygone era. To understand and to explain the role of religion in war in ourtimes one has to consider a wider historical perspective as well as developments of the 20th century. Their insights might prove to be useful for discussions of the theory of just war as well as peace ethics. The articles included in the sixth issue of the "Journal of Religion and Transformation in Contemporary Society" debate those topics from various perspectives and disciplines (historiography, philosophy, theology, anglistics …).
